NJ Pizzeria Birthday Cake Dispute Goes Viral After Knife Request
A birthday celebration at a Jersey Shore pizzeria turned tense after a family asked for a knife to cut a cake they had brought for a child’s party. A viral video shows a heated exchange between the group and a restaurant staff member, sparking a wave of reactions online.
The incident happened Saturday at Joey Tomato’s on the Jenkinson’s boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. The customers had brought an outside birthday cake and later asked for a knife after finishing their meal.
A staff member told the group, “You don’t just walk into a restaurant and do whatever you want,” before adding, “How about if I just come to your house with a cake?”
The staff member also called the knife request “inappropriate” and questioned why the customers expected to use the restaurant’s items for their celebration.
Viral Video Draws Attention
Tom Jurkowski, founder of the New Jersey nostalgia social media page @Vintage.New.Jersey, recorded the exchange. He was with the group for his nephew’s fifth birthday.
Jurkowski later shared the footage on TikTok, saying the table had asked for permission to bring the cake beforehand. He said the group spent about $250 on four large pizzas and beverages.
His caption explained that the group asked for a knife after eating and offered to pay an additional fee. He described the owner’s reaction as “the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced.”
Doreen Sullivan-Karcich was identified by Patch as the pizzeria’s owner and was involved in the dispute. During the exchange, Karcich said, “Okay so when I come to your house with my candles and my cake, am I going to be able to do whatever I want there now?”
She later ended the conversation by telling Jurkowski and the group, “I don’t owe you anything, have a good day!”
Social Media Reaction

Instagram | jerseycoastemergencynews | A restaurant owner’s clash with customers over a birthday cake went viral, dividing the internet on dining etiquette.
The TikTok quickly gained major attention. @Vintage.New.Jersey has more than 500,000 followers across TikTok, Instagram, X and Facebook, helping the video reach a wide audience.
On Tuesday, Jurkowski posted an update saying he was “still surprised how the situation unfolded” and that the response had caught the group “completely off-guard.”
Neither Jurkowski nor Joey Tomato’s immediately responded to requests for comment. The pizzeria’s social media accounts also drew heavy criticism over how the dispute was handled. Joey Tomato’s Yelp page was also blocked by the site because of unusual activity.
The dispute centered on a simple birthday-cake request that quickly became a public confrontation. The customers said they had received permission to bring the cake, while the restaurant owner objected when they requested a knife to cut it.
The viral video has since pushed the disagreement far beyond the original table, drawing widespread online debate about restaurant policies, outside food and how staff handle customer disputes.
